Ferrara and the Po Delta

THE MEDIEVAL CITY

This itinerary includes a visit to the Estense Castle , originally fortress and later splendid Renaissance residence of the court; to the cathedral, unusual and perfect fusion of different styles, Romanesque and Gothic, continuing with a walk through the Jewish Ghetto and ending with the
characteristic Via delle Volte, very old street, used by the merchants, living along side the original branch of the river Po.

RENAISSANCE FERRARA

This itinerary starts with a visit to Schifanoia Palace, summer residence, used for entertainment for the court, decorated with the fifteenth century cycle of frescos in the Hall of the Months. The tour
includes a panoramic view of the beautiful  Gateway of the Angels, a visit of the famous Addizione Erculea, the great urban enterprise commissioned by Hercules I, including the famous Diamond Palace.

CYCLING DISCOVERY TOUR OF FERRARA

A bicycle tour of the fortified ring of the old City Walls. Both the tree-lined ramparts and the ancient earthworks are accessible to  cyclists. The cycling program will be completed with a run into the central section of the town for a view of the most outstanding historical buildings. On this program an extra charge will be added for bicycle hiring.

THE JEWISH CITY OF GIORGIO BASSANI

“My city, Ferrara, is not an ordinary city, it’s really mine”. With these words the great writer expresses his devotion to the city, (which is) the set of all his works. The itinerary will follow  the real streets, squares and places described in Bassani’s novels: the Castle, Via degli Adelardi, Via delle Volte, the Synagogue and the Jewish neighbourhood, Corso Ercole I d’Este which leads to the Diamonds’ Palace and to the Walls of the Angels, the Massari Park, the fabulous garden where the imaginary tale of the Finzi Contini family unfolds. On request it is possible to visit the suggestive Jewish Cemetery where the writer is buried.

COMACCHIO AND THE ABBEY OF POMPOSA

Visit of the city centre of Comacchio, the “Venice of the poors”. This small town has preserved its “lagoon” charm of a city built on water, due to the various canals and the typical brickwork bridges, like the famous “Trepponti”. You will also admire: the Ponte degli Sbirri , the former Hospital of S. Camillo, Bellini Palace, the Loggia of the Capuchins.
Transfer by bus through the Acciaioli road, panoramic route among the Valli (marshes).
Arrival to the romanesque Abbey of Pomposa and visit to the ancient abbey complex which boasts an impressive cycle of frescoes dating back to the 14th century and refined mosaics on the floor.

NATURALISTIC AREAS IN THE PO DELTA

Excursions by coach, on foot and/or by boat.

The Po Delta Park occupies a large area of the Emilia Romagna region, and owns territorial and ecological characters that make it unique in its kind.
The meeting of land and waters has created a landscape in which pinewoods and forests alternate with inland damp zones of salt water and fresh water.
The Po Delta is an extraordinary  landscape which retains its original features and belongs since 1999 to the World Heritage list by Unesco.
A large variety of water fowl, fish and some mammals, constitute the typical fauna of the Delta fascinating environment.
